What have you got planned

This is where we could use clichés like "fail to plan and you plan to fail". Or "without a roadmap, how will you know where you're going?" Better still, "a marketing plan will save you time and money".

But plain and simple, we think marketing plans are cardinal (not to mention the fact that we hate it when organisations can't think of anything more original to say than "we'll save you time and money").

What exactly is a marketing plan?

A marketing plan doesn't need to be 50-page document that takes forever to write, only to be filed away under a pile of other stuff on your desk. It doesn't need to include reams of theory, in-depth competitive research and a SWOT analysis.

No. A marketing plan can be as simple as a one-page document you tack up on the wall. What matters is that you give some thought to what your business objectives are for the next six to twelve months and then write down some plans that will guide you toward those goals.

Think about the activity that you can do that will help you find more customers, increase your repeat business, expand to new markets – whatever it is that you want to achieve. That activity, by the way, doesn't have to just include paid advertising. We can look at other opportunities like e-newsletters, publicity, social networking, events, advertorials, speaking engagements, online marketing, and whatever else you might want to try.
